OCR A level Maths paper structure
| Paper | Questions or marks | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: pure mathematics | 100 marks | 2 hours |
| Paper 2: pure mathematics and statistics | 100 marks | 2 hours |
| Paper 3: pure mathematics and mechanics | 100 marks | 2 hours |
A calculator is allowed in every paper, and you get the board's formula booklet in the exam.
What each paper covers
| Paper 1 | Pure mathematics: proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, numerical methods and vectors. |
|---|---|
| Paper 2 | Pure mathematics with statistics: statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, the binomial and normal distributions, and hypothesis testing. |
| Paper 3 | Pure mathematics with mechanics: quantities and units, kinematics (including constant acceleration and projectiles), forces and Newton's laws, and moments. |
Every paper includes pure mathematics, so pure topics carry about two thirds of the marks across the qualification.
Tips for OCR A level Maths papers
- OCR's statistics questions draw on its pre-release large data set. Explore it before the exam so its context is familiar.
- OCR often asks you to comment on a model's assumptions or limitations. Practise writing one clear sentence for these.
- The answer book is separate from the question paper in recent series, so practise writing full working in a separate space.
- Use the examiner reports to find which proofs and modelling questions students found hardest.
