AQA A level Maths paper structure
| Paper | Questions or marks | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: pure | 100 marks | 2 hours |
| Paper 2: pure and mechanics | 100 marks | 2 hours |
| Paper 3: pure and statistics | 100 marks | 2 hours |
A calculator is allowed in every paper, and you get the board's formula booklet in the exam.
What each paper covers
| Paper 1 | Pure maths only: proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, numerical methods and vectors. |
|---|---|
| Paper 2 | Pure maths in Section A, then mechanics in Section B: quantities and units, kinematics (including constant acceleration and projectiles), forces and Newton's laws, and moments. |
| Paper 3 | Pure maths in Section A, then statistics in Section B: statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, the binomial and normal distributions, and hypothesis testing. |
Because Papers 2 and 3 also start with pure maths, pure topics make up about two thirds of the whole qualification.
Tips for AQA A level Maths papers
- Paper 2 and Paper 3 each start with pure questions, so a weak pure topic costs marks in all three papers. Fix pure gaps first.
- AQA statistics questions use the large data set. Know its variables and context before your exam.
- In mechanics, draw a clear force diagram for every question, even when it is not asked for.
- Read the examiner reports: AQA lists the common errors on each question, which is the fastest way to stop losing easy marks.
