What we cover in Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is usually grade 10 or 11. Every topic of the course, taught 1-on-1 at your pace and in your class's order.

  • Functions, transformations and inverses
  • Quadratics and complex numbers
  • Polynomials: division, roots and graphs
  • Rational expressions and functions
  • Radicals and rational exponents
  • Exponential and logarithmic functions
  • Sequences and series
  • Trigonometric functions and the unit circle
  • Probability and statistics

How we plan your Algebra 2 classes

Adapted after your free demo class: we spend the time where it matters most for you.

  1. Find the gapsYour free demo class starts with a few questions to see which earlier skills are solid and which need work.
  2. Fix the foundationsWe fill those gaps first, because most trouble in Algebra 2 comes from a skill from an earlier course.
  3. Keep ahead of classEach week we work on your homework and the next topic your teacher will cover, so class makes sense the first time.
  4. Prepare for testsUnit tests and finals, plus the algebra on the SAT and ACT, with timed practice and an error log.

Try two Algebra 2 questions

Typical class-test questions. Have a go, then open the worked solution.

Algebra 2 · question 1

Solve 2x + 1 = 32.

Show the worked solution
  1. Write 32 as a power of 2: 32 = 25.
  2. The bases match, so the exponents are equal: x + 1 = 5.
  3. Answer: x = 4.

Algebra 2 · question 2

Solve log3(x) + log3(x − 8) = 2.

Show the worked solution
  1. Combine the logs: log3(x(x − 8)) = 2.
  2. Rewrite without logs: x(x − 8) = 3² = 9, so x² − 8x − 9 = 0.
  3. Factor: (x − 9)(x + 1) = 0, so x = 9 or x = −1.
  4. Check: log3(−1) is not defined, so reject x = −1.
  5. Answer: x = 9.

Where Algebra 2 leads

Each course builds on the one before, so a strong Algebra 2 makes the next class easier.

Algebra 1 → Geometry → Algebra 2 → Precalculus → AP Calculus AB or BC

AP Physics 1 also uses algebra and trigonometry from these courses on almost every question.
