A 10-week TMUA plan

Adapted to your free review: we spend the time where your marks are.

  1. Weeks 1 and 2: diagnoseA timed official paper, then a line-by-line review: which marks went on content, which on logic, which on time.
  2. Weeks 3 and 4: Paper 1 toolkitFast algebra, graphs, sequences, logs and calculus without a calculator, and spotting the quick route.
  3. Weeks 5 and 6: Paper 2 logicIf and only if, necessary and sufficient, negation, counterexamples, and finding the flaw in an argument.
  4. Weeks 7 and 8: timed papersOfficial papers under exam timing, with a strategy for which questions to leave and come back to.
  5. Weeks 9 and 10: final mocksFull mocks reviewed 1-on-1, an error log of every lost mark, and a test-day routine.

Try two TMUA-style questions

Original questions in the style of each paper. No calculator, two minutes each.

Paper 1 style

How many real solutions does 4x − 5 × 2x + 4 = 0 have?

  1. 0
  2. 1
  3. 2
  4. 3
  5. 4
Show the worked solution
  1. Spot the hidden quadratic: 4x = (2x)2. Let y = 2x.
  2. y2 − 5y + 4 = 0 factorises to (y − 1)(y − 4) = 0, so y = 1 or y = 4.
  3. 2x = 1 gives x = 0, and 2x = 4 gives x = 2. Both are valid because 2x is always positive.
  4. Answer: C, two solutions. About a minute, with no calculator: that is the speed the TMUA rewards.

Paper 2 style

Consider the statement: “If a whole number n is a multiple of 6, then n is a multiple of 3.” Which of these is true about its converse?

  1. The converse is true.
  2. The converse is false, and n = 9 shows it.
  3. The converse is false, and n = 12 shows it.
  4. The converse is the same as the contrapositive.
Show the worked solution
  1. The converse swaps the two parts: “if n is a multiple of 3, then n is a multiple of 6.”
  2. n = 9 is a multiple of 3 but not of 6, so the converse is false, and 9 is a counterexample.
  3. n = 12 is a multiple of both, so it does not disprove anything. The contrapositive (“if n is not a multiple of 3, then it is not a multiple of 6”) is a different statement, equivalent to the original.
  4. Answer: B. Paper 2 is full of converse and contrapositive traps like this one.
