  • Solving linear equations and inequalities
  • Functions and function notation
  • Slope, intercepts and graphing lines
  • Systems of equations
  • Exponent rules and exponential functions
  • Polynomials and factoring
  • Quadratic equations, graphs and the quadratic formula

How we plan your Algebra 1 classes

Adapted after your free demo class: we spend the time where it matters most for you.

  1. Find the gapsYour free demo class starts with a few questions to see which earlier skills are solid and which need work.
  2. Fix the foundationsWe fill those gaps first, because most trouble in Algebra 1 comes from a skill from an earlier course.
  3. Keep ahead of classEach week we work on your homework and the next topic your teacher will cover, so class makes sense the first time.
  4. Prepare for testsState end-of-course exams, such as the Texas STAAR Algebra 1 test, and your unit tests and finals, with timed practice and an error log.

Try two Algebra 1 questions

Typical class-test questions. Have a go, then open the worked solution.

Algebra 1 · question 1

Solve 3(x − 4) = 2x + 5.

Show the worked solution
  1. Expand the bracket: 3x − 12 = 2x + 5.
  2. Subtract 2x from both sides: x − 12 = 5.
  3. Add 12 to both sides.
  4. Answer: x = 17.

Algebra 1 · question 2

Solve x² − 5x − 14 = 0.

Show the worked solution
  1. Find two numbers that multiply to −14 and add to −5: −7 and 2.
  2. Factor: (x − 7)(x + 2) = 0.
  3. Set each factor to zero: x − 7 = 0 or x + 2 = 0.
  4. Answer: x = 7 or x = −2.

Where Algebra 1 leads

Each course builds on the one before, so a strong Algebra 1 makes the next class easier.

Algebra 1 → Geometry → Algebra 2 → Precalculus → AP Calculus AB or BC

AP Physics 1 also uses algebra and trigonometry from these courses on almost every question.
