On Edexcel International A level? We teach it too. Tell us your board in your first message.

How we plan your A levels

Adapted to your free review: we spend the time where your marks are.

  1. DiagnoseYour free paper review: which marks went on physics, which on maths, and which on reading the question.
  2. Year 1 foundationsMechanics, materials, waves and electricity, with the maths behind them: rearranging, units, vectors and graphs.
  3. Year 2 topicsCircular motion, oscillations, gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, capacitors, thermal and nuclear physics.
  4. Practical skillsUncertainties, graphs, and the practical questions in the written papers, matched to your board's practicals.
  5. Exam papersTimed past papers, marked against the official mark scheme, with an error log of every lost mark.

Pure

The curve y = x3 − 6x2 + 9x + 1 has two stationary points. What are the coordinates of the local maximum?

  1. (1, 5)
  2. (3, 1)
  3. (−1, −15)
  4. (3, 5)
Show the worked solution
  1. Differentiate: dy/dx = 3x2 − 12x + 9 = 3(x − 1)(x − 3), so the stationary points are at x = 1 and x = 3.
  2. Second derivative: d2y/dx2 = 6x − 12. At x = 1 it is −6, which is negative, so x = 1 is a maximum.
  3. y = 1 − 6 + 9 + 1 = 5.
  4. Answer: A, (1, 5). (3, 1) is the local minimum.

Electricity

A battery of e.m.f. 12 V and internal resistance 0.50 Ω is connected to a 5.5 Ω resistor. What is the terminal potential difference?

  1. 1.0 V
  2. 11 V
  3. 12 V
  4. 13 V
Show the worked solution
  1. Total resistance = 5.5 + 0.50 = 6.0 Ω, so the current is I = 12/6.0 = 2.0 A.
  2. The “lost volts” across the internal resistance are Ir = 2.0 × 0.50 = 1.0 V.
  3. Terminal p.d. = ε − Ir = 12 − 1.0 = 11 V.
  4. Answer: B. Option A is the lost volts, not the terminal p.d.
