How the AP Physics C: Mechanics exam is scored

The May 2027 exam has 42 multiple-choice questions in 85 minutes, then 4 free-response questions in 95 minutes. The exam is on Monday 3 May 2027, morning session. Multiple choice and free response are each worth 50% of your score.

Your raw points are turned into a composite score: multiple choice and free response each scaled to 45, out of 90. College Board then sets the composite needed for each AP score from 1 to 5, separately each year, to keep scores fair when one paper is harder than another.

Example. Say you get 25 of 42 multiple-choice questions right and 20 of 40 free-response points. Multiple choice gives 45 × 25/42 = 26.8. Free response gives 45 × 20/40 = 22.5. The composite is 49 of 90, which this calculator reads as a 4.

The cut-offs this calculator uses

College Board does not publish the cut-offs for recent exams. It did publish them for the 2012 AP Physics C: Mechanics exam, which College Board released in full with its scoring worksheet. Its worksheet scored 35 multiple-choice questions scaled to 45, plus 3 free-response questions of 15 points, out of 90: half multiple choice and half free response, the same split as today. We use its cut-offs, shown below as composite points, and apply them to the 2027 question counts.

AP scoreComposite (out of 90)Share of the composite
554 to 9060% or more
442 to 5347% or more
333 to 4137% or more
225 to 3228% or more
10 to 24below 28%

What you need for a 3, 4 or 5

The free-response points you need for each score, depending on how many multiple-choice questions you get right. Use it to set a target for your next practice test.

Multiple choice correctFor a 3 (of 40)For a 4 (of 40)For a 5 (of 40)

25 of 4261424
29 of 4221020
34 of 420516
38 of 420112

Two things stand out. First, multiple choice and free response trade off evenly, so a weak section can be made up in the other. Second, each multiple-choice question is worth 1.07 composite points and each free-response point is worth 1.12, so one free-response point is worth more than one multiple-choice question.

How students did on each free-response question in 2025

College Board publishes the average points for every question. These are the 2025 figures; the pre-filled example above uses them, rounded.

Where AP Physics C: Mechanics students lose points

In 2025 the qualitative/quantitative translation question was by far the hardest: an average of 2.30 of 8 points, under 30%. That question asks you to reason about a situation in words and then support the reasoning with a derivation, and many strong calculators find it uncomfortable. Points also go on:

How to use this calculator well

  1. Mark honestly. Use the official scoring guidelines for every free-response question, and give yourself a point only when your answer matches what the guideline asks for.
  2. Sit the test timed. A score from an untimed test overestimates you. Use the 2027 timings.
  3. Track it over time. One estimate is noisy. Three practice tests a few weeks apart show the trend, which is what matters.
  4. Look at the gap, not the score. The calculator tells you how many points you need for the next score. Find the unit where those points are easiest to win.

Frequently asked questions

Is this AP Physics C: Mechanics score calculator accurate?

It gives an estimate. The cut-offs change every year and College Board does not publish them for recent exams, so no calculator can be exact. Ours uses College Board's own published chart from the 2012 AP Physics C: Mechanics exam, and says so.

What percentage do you need for a 5 on AP Physics C: Mechanics?

On the cut-offs this calculator uses, about 60% of the composite. A 3 needs about 37%.

Is there a penalty for wrong answers?

No. Multiple choice is scored only on correct answers, so answer every question.

When are 2027 AP Physics C: Mechanics scores released?

College Board releases AP scores in July. It has not announced the exact 2027 day yet.
