IB score calculator
Enter your predicted or actual grades to see your IB Diploma total out of 45, and whether you meet the usual conditions for the diploma. It checks more than the 24-point minimum: HL and SL totals, low grades, the core and CAS.

Pre-filled with an example: HL 6, 6, 5; SL 6, 5, 5; 2 core points. Tap any grade and the result updates.
Enter your core points directly. They come from your TOK and extended essay grades combined in the IB's matrix, from 0 to 3, and your coordinator can confirm them. An E in either one fails the diploma, so switch on that option if it applies.
What the calculator checks
As usually summarised from the IB's rules, the diploma is awarded only if all of these hold:
- at least 24 points in total;
- no grade 1;
- no more than two grade 2s;
- no more than three grades of 3 or below;
- at least 12 points from the three HL subjects and 9 from the three SL subjects;
- no E in TOK or the extended essay, and CAS complete.
The IB can update its rules, and some students take four HL subjects or only two SL subjects, which changes the HL and SL checks. Always confirm with your IB coordinator. Our guide to IB points and diploma requirements explains each rule.
A strong total
HL 7, 7, 6; SL 6, 6, 5; core 3. What is the total?
- 7 + 7 + 6 + 6 + 6 + 5 = 37 from subjects, plus 3 core points.
- Total = 40 points, and every condition is met.
24 points, but no diploma
HL 5, 4, 2; SL 5, 5, 2; core 1. What happens?
- Total = 5 + 4 + 2 + 5 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 24.
- There are only two grade 2s, so that rule is met, but the HL total is 5 + 4 + 2 = 11, below 12.
- So the diploma is not awarded, despite 24 points.
Planning from predictions
Your predictions are HL 6, 5, 5; SL 6, 5, 4; core 1, total 32. Your target offer is 34 with 6 in HL Maths. Where should you focus?
- You need 2 more points, and HL Maths must rise from 5 to 6.
- Raising HL Maths to 6 gives 33 and meets the subject condition.
- One more point from any subject, or a better core result, reaches 34.
Using predicted grades
Teachers send predicted grades to universities before your exams. Put your predictions into the calculator to see where you stand, then work on the subjects where one grade makes the biggest difference, especially HL subjects named in your offers.
Why core points matter at the borderline
Core points can decide a pass or a university offer. A candidate with 23 subject points needs at least 1 core point to reach 24, and a student one point short of a 34 offer can make it up with a stronger extended essay or TOK grade. Because both are finished before the exams, they are among the most controllable points in the whole diploma.
More questions
Can I use this for four HL subjects?
The calculator is set up for the usual three HL and three SL subjects. With four HL subjects the HL and SL rules are applied differently, so ask your coordinator.
Does the calculator include bonus points for a bilingual diploma?
No. A bilingual diploma is a different type of award, not extra points. Your total is still out of 45.
What score do I need for a university in India?
Indian universities set their own rules for IB students, sometimes converting grades to percentages. Check each university's admission page.
Are predicted grades the same as final grades?
No. Predicted grades are your teachers' estimates for university applications. Your final grades come from the IB on results day and can be higher or lower than predicted.
Common mistakes
- Treating 24 points as an automatic pass.
- Forgetting that an E in TOK or the extended essay fails the diploma.
- Ignoring a weak SL subject that drags the SL total below 9.
- Guessing core points instead of checking them with your coordinator.

Frequently asked questions
How are core points worked out?
Your TOK and extended essay grades, each A to E, are combined in a matrix published by the IB to give 0 to 3 points. Ask your coordinator for the current matrix.
Is this calculator official?
No. It applies the usual published conditions to help you plan. Your official result comes only from the IB.
What IB score do I need for top universities?
Offers vary by university and course, often from the mid-30s to above 40, with specific HL grades.
Key takeaways
- Six subjects at 1 to 7, plus 0 to 3 core points.
- 24 points is necessary but not sufficient.
- HL at least 12, SL at least 9, few low grades.
- No E in TOK or EE; CAS complete.
- Plan with predicted grades and HL requirements.
