AP vs IB: how they compare
AP and IB are both demanding programmes that universities respect, but they work very differently. AP is a menu of separate courses and exams; the IB Diploma is a complete two-year programme. Here is how to decide.

The basic difference
- AP (Advanced Placement) is run by the College Board. You choose individual courses, such as AP Physics 1 or AP Calculus BC, and take a separate exam for each in May, scored 1 to 5.
- The IB Diploma Programme is run by the International Baccalaureate. You take six subjects over two years, at least three at higher level, plus theory of knowledge, the extended essay and CAS, scored out of 45.
Side by side
- Flexibility: AP lets you take one exam or many; the IB Diploma is a fixed structure, though many schools also allow individual IB courses.
- Assessment: AP is decided by the May exam alone. IB subjects combine exams with internal assessment, usually 20% to 30% of the grade.
- Depth versus breadth: AP can let you go very deep in chosen subjects, such as both AP Physics C exams. The IB requires breadth across languages, humanities, science and maths.
- Self-study: many students self-study AP exams, including students outside the US. The IB requires enrolment at an authorised IB school.
- University credit: US universities often give credit for AP scores of 3, 4 or 5 and for IB HL grades, under their own policies. Elsewhere, both are used mainly for admission.
Choosing for an engineering applicant
A student at a school that offers both wants to apply to US engineering programmes. How could each route look?
- AP route: AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, AP Chemistry and AP Computer Science A over two years, alongside the school's regular courses.
- IB route: Maths AA HL, Physics HL and Chemistry HL, with three SL subjects and the core.
- Both are strong. The AP route maximises depth in maths and physics; the IB route shows breadth and independent research through the extended essay.
Comparing workload
Which demands more total work?
- The IB Diploma usually demands more total time, because of six subjects, internal assessments, TOK, the extended essay and CAS.
- AP workload depends entirely on how many courses you take: five AP exams in one year can be as heavy as the IB.
How to decide
- Check what your school offers. Many schools offer only one programme.
- Check your target universities. Read their pages on AP and IB, especially for credit and course requirements.
- Be honest about how you like to learn. If you enjoy writing, research and many subjects, the IB fits. If you want to focus hard on a few subjects, AP fits.
- Consider combining. Some IB students also sit an AP exam in a subject they know well, such as AP Calculus BC.
AP and IB for students in India
- IB: available only at IB-authorised schools, which in India are mostly international schools. The Diploma Programme covers the years of Classes 11 and 12.
- AP: some schools in India offer AP courses, and students at other schools can register as outside candidates at a school or College Board-authorised test centre. The fee outside the US is $129 per exam for 2026-27, and centres may add their own charges.
- Mixing systems: students on CBSE, ICSE or Cambridge often add one or two AP exams, such as AP Calculus BC or AP Physics C, to strengthen applications to US universities.
A sample timeline
- Class 10 or Grade 10: decide on the route and check what your school offers.
- September to November of the exam year: AP students register with a school or test centre; most orders close in mid-November.
- The two exam years: IB students build their IAs, extended essay and CAS alongside their courses.
- May: AP exams and IB exams are both held in May.
- July: AP scores and May-session IB results are both released in early July.
More questions
Can IB students also take AP exams?
Yes. Some IB students sit an AP exam in a subject they know well, such as AP Calculus BC, to add a US-recognised score. They register through a school or test centre that offers it.
Which is better for studying in the UK?
UK universities accept both, but they are more used to the IB Diploma and A Levels. AP applicants are usually asked for several AP scores, often 5s, so check each course's international entry requirements.
Do I need AP or IB to apply to US universities?
No. US universities admit students from every curriculum, including CBSE and ICSE. AP or IB courses simply show that you have taken demanding courses where they are available.
Which is cheaper?
AP exams are paid per exam, while IB fees are usually built into the school's fees. Compare the total cost at your own school or test centre.
Common mistakes
- Choosing by reputation instead of by your target universities and courses.
- Taking too many AP exams in one year and spreading yourself thin.
- Underestimating the IB core, which can decide whether you get the diploma.
- Assuming every university gives credit for every score.

Frequently asked questions
Do universities prefer IB or AP?
Most selective universities respect both and judge you within what your school offers. Rigour, grades and fit with your course matter more than the label.
Is AP easier than IB?
Not necessarily. Individual AP exams can be as hard as IB HL subjects; the IB adds more breadth and coursework.
Can I take AP exams in India?
Yes, through a school or authorised test centre. See our guide to AP exams in India.
Key takeaways
- AP: separate courses and exams, scored 1 to 5.
- IB: a full two-year programme, scored out of 45.
- AP offers depth and flexibility; IB offers breadth and coursework.
- Both are respected by universities.
- Decide by school options, target universities and how you like to learn.
