Taking AP exams from India
Advanced Placement (AP) exams are run by the College Board in the United States, but thousands of students take them outside the US. If you are in India, here is how registration works, what it costs, when the exams are, and how to prepare.

What AP exams are
AP exams are university-level exams set by the College Board. Each is scored from 1 to 5. Students in India take them mainly to strengthen applications to universities in the US and elsewhere, and some US universities give course credit for high scores. You do not need to be enrolled in an AP class to take an exam: many students in India self-study alongside CBSE, ICSE, IB or Cambridge courses.
This page is about Advanced Placement exams, not the Andhra Pradesh state exams that are also shortened to “AP”.
How registration works
You cannot order AP exams directly from the College Board. An AP coordinator at a school or an authorised test centre orders them for you, collects the fee and tells you where and when to sit.
- If your school offers AP exams, register through your school's AP coordinator.
- If it does not, find a school or College Board-authorised test centre that accepts outside students. Use the College Board's AP test centre search for students outside the US; the list changes every year.
- Contact the centre early in the school year. Schools must submit most AP orders by 13 November 2026 for May 2027 exams, and many centres set their own earlier deadlines.
- Join the class section in My AP with the code the coordinator gives you.
What it costs
- For 2026-27, the College Board fee is $129 per exam at schools outside the US, Canada and US territories, against $99 inside the US.
- Authorised test centres outside the US may charge more, so ask the centre for its total price in rupees.
- Orders placed after 13 November 2026 and by 12 March 2027 carry a $40 late fee per exam, and exams cancelled after 13 November can incur a $40 unused-exam fee.
Fees are set by the College Board and can change, so always confirm with your coordinator.
When the exams are
AP exams are held over two weeks in early May, at fixed times worldwide. Our AP exam schedule for 2027 lists every exam and time. Exams for students outside the US may start at different local times, and your centre will confirm your reporting time. Scores are released in July.
Which AP exams students in India take
Students applying for engineering, computer science or science courses abroad often take AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, plus subjects that match their plans, such as AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science A or AP Statistics. Choose exams that support the course you want to study and that your current curriculum prepares you for.
Planning exams around a board syllabus
A CBSE Class 11 student strong in physics and maths wants three AP exams in May 2027. What is a sensible plan?
- AP Calculus BC overlaps with Class 11 and 12 calculus, but adds series, parametric and polar topics that need extra study.
- AP Physics C: Mechanics uses calculus-based mechanics, which builds on Class 11 physics.
- A third exam could be AP Physics C: E&M, but it needs Class 12 electricity and magnetism earlier than CBSE teaches it, so start it early or choose another subject.
- Register with a centre before mid-November 2026, then plan weekly study from November to April.
Estimating total cost
A student takes three AP exams at a centre that charges the College Board fee plus a centre fee of $25 per exam. What is the total in dollars?
- College Board fee: 3 × $129 = $387.
- Centre fees: 3 × $25 = $75.
- Total: $462, before any late fees. Ask the centre for its exact charge, which varies.
How to prepare from India
- Download the course and exam description for each subject from AP Central and check which topics your board already covers.
- Practise free-response questions: the College Board publishes past questions with scoring guidelines, linked on our past papers pages.
- Learn the exam formats for 2027, which have changed for several exams: see our guides to AP Physics 1 in 2027 and AP Calculus in 2027.
- Take timed practice exams in March and April, and use a score calculator to see where you stand.
Common mistakes
- Waiting until January to find a test centre: most orders close in November.
- Assuming the US fee applies; outside the US it is higher, and centres may add charges.
- Choosing too many exams to study alongside board exams in the same months.
- Confusing Advanced Placement with Andhra Pradesh state exams when searching for information.
