How we plan your A level Maths
Adapted to your free review: we spend the time where your marks are.
- DiagnoseYour free paper review: which marks went on method, which on algebra slips, and which on reading the question.
- Pure foundationsAlgebra, functions, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, until the manipulation is quick and reliable.
- Calculus and beyondDifferentiation, integration, parametric equations, differential equations and numerical methods.
- Statistics and mechanicsDistributions and hypothesis tests, then kinematics, forces, moments and projectiles, with a clear diagram every time.
- Exam papersTimed past papers, marked against the official mark scheme, with an error log of every lost mark.
Try two A level Maths questions
Original questions at A level standard. Give yourself three minutes each, then open the solution.
Pure
The curve y = x3 − 6x2 + 9x + 1 has two stationary points. What are the coordinates of the local maximum?
- (1, 5)
- (3, 1)
- (−1, −15)
- (3, 5)
Show the worked solution
- Differentiate: dy/dx = 3x2 − 12x + 9 = 3(x − 1)(x − 3), so the stationary points are at x = 1 and x = 3.
- Second derivative: d2y/dx2 = 6x − 12. At x = 1 it is −6, which is negative, so x = 1 is a maximum.
- y = 1 − 6 + 9 + 1 = 5.
- Answer: A, (1, 5). (3, 1) is the local minimum.
Statistics
X follows the binomial distribution B(10, 0.3). What is P(X = 2), to 4 decimal places?
- 0.0052
- 0.2335
- 0.3828
- 0.6172
Show the worked solution
- P(X = 2) = 10C2 × 0.32 × 0.78.
- = 45 × 0.09 × 0.057648 = 0.2335.
- Answer: B. Option A leaves out 10C2, and option C is P(X ≤ 2), the cumulative probability.
