Try two IGCSE Maths questions
Original questions at IGCSE standard. Give yourself two minutes each, then open the solution.
IGCSE Maths, non-calculator
Expand and simplify (2x + 3)(x − 4).
- 2x2 − 5x − 12
- 2x2 + 5x − 12
- 2x2 − 11x − 12
- 2x2 − 5x + 12
Show the worked solution
- Multiply every term: 2x × x = 2x2, 2x × (−4) = −8x, 3 × x = 3x, 3 × (−4) = −12.
- Collect like terms: −8x + 3x = −5x.
- Answer: A. Option D is the usual sign slip on 3 × (−4).
IGCSE Maths, calculator
After a 20% reduction, a laptop costs 800 dollars. What was the original price?
- 960 dollars
- 1000 dollars
- 1040 dollars
- 1200 dollars
Show the worked solution
- After a 20% reduction the price is 80% of the original, so 0.8 × original = 800.
- Original = 800 ÷ 0.8 = 1000 dollars.
- Answer: B. Option A adds 20% of 800 instead of reversing the percentage.
