Checked against the IB subject guides in October 2026.
IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA)
- SL Paper 1 (no calculator) 40%, Paper 2 (calculator) 40%, exploration 20%
- HL Paper 1 30%, Paper 2 30%, Paper 3 problem-solving 20%, exploration 20%
AA leans on algebra, calculus and proof. Paper 1 is taken without a calculator.
IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI)
- SL Paper 1 40%, Paper 2 40%, exploration 20%, calculator in both
- HL Paper 1 30%, Paper 2 30%, Paper 3 20%, exploration 20%

Try two IB Maths questions
Original questions at IB standard. Give yourself two minutes each, then open the solution.
IB Maths, Paper 1 style (no calculator)
The first three terms of an arithmetic sequence are 7, 11 and 15. What is the sum of the first 20 terms?
- 820
- 860
- 900
- 940
Show the worked solution
- The first term is u1 = 7 and the common difference is d = 4.
- Sn = n/2 (2u1 + (n − 1)d), so S20 = 10 × (14 + 19 × 4) = 10 × 90 = 900.
- Answer: C, 900. Option B comes from using 18 differences instead of 19.
IB Maths, Paper 2 style
What is the maximum value of f(x) = x e−x, to 3 significant figures?
- 0.271
- 0.368
- 0.500
- 1.00
Show the worked solution
- Product rule: f′(x) = e−x − x e−x = e−x(1 − x).
- e−x is never zero, so f′(x) = 0 only at x = 1, where f changes from increasing to decreasing.
- f(1) = e−1 = 0.368.
- Answer: B. Option A is f(2), a common slip after solving f′(x) = 0 wrongly.
